Backup internet: how 5G failover keeps you online

Backup internet is a second connection that takes over when your main one drops. With 5G failover, the backup rides on the cellular network — a different path than your cable or fiber line — so card readers, phones, cameras and video calls can keep working through an outage.

What is internet failover?

Failover is the switch from a main connection to a backup when the main one fails. It can be automatic — a router with a backup port notices the outage and moves traffic over in moments — or manual, where you switch your devices to the backup Wi-Fi yourself. Either way, the backup has to travel a different path than the main line, or one outage takes out both.

Who needs backup internet?

  • Businesses that take cards, answer internet phones or run online bookings.
  • People who work from home and cannot miss a call or a deadline.
  • Homes with security cameras or other devices that need to stay online.
  • Anyone on cable or fiber in an area with frequent outages from storms or construction.

How do I set up a 5G backup line?

Two common ways:

  1. As its own Wi-Fi network. The Mac5G router runs next to your main router. When the main line drops, switch your devices to the Mac5G Wi-Fi.
  2. Plugged into a dual-WAN router. If your main router has a backup (WAN) port, connect the Mac5G router to it and the switch happens automatically.

For a business that needs it built in, Business Internet Pro pairs unlimited 5G with a second network that takes over by itself (automatic failover to the Mac Orbit network, 300GB a month). The Spark K500A router has two SIMs with automatic failover and up to 8 hours of battery backup, so it keeps running through a power cut.

How much data does a backup line need?

Less than you might think, because it only carries traffic during outages. Home Lite (20GB a month) covers occasional outages for a home. A shop that runs card payments and internet phones through an outage can start with Business Internet Lite (30GB a month); a business that must stay fully online should look at the unlimited plans or Business Internet Pro.

What does backup internet cost?

A Mac5G backup line starts at $79.99 a month for Home Lite with autopay and an active Mac5G phone line on the same account ($89.99 list), plus the router, bought or rented for $14.99 a month. Taxes and fees are added on top. See backup and RV plans and Mac5G Business.

Why not just use my phone’s hotspot?

For a few minutes, a hotspot works. A dedicated backup line covers the whole network — registers, phones, cameras — without draining a phone battery or its data, and it is ready before the outage starts.

Questions people ask

Does 5G backup internet switch over automatically?

It can. Connected to a router with a backup (dual-WAN) port, the switch is automatic. Business Internet Pro has a second network built in. Otherwise you switch devices to the backup Wi-Fi yourself.

Will backup internet work in a power outage?

The Spark router has up to 8 hours of battery backup. Your other equipment, such as modems, card readers and phones, needs its own battery or power backup to stay on.

Can I suspend a backup line when I don’t need it?

The Home Lite and Home data plans can be suspended between trips or seasons. Call us and we set it up with you.
